Totally Totally Discouraging

The first half of Chapter 6 in the Extra Class book. Didn’t understand a thing (except for the blurb on crystal’s) until I got to the Digital Signal Processing part. Everything after that was somewhat understandable. Might have well been reading Klingon until then. Guess I really am a “computer” type of guy. As long as I don’t have to build the parts for one, that is.

Assembling a computer from component parts is pretty straight forward. And easy. Getting them up and running isn’t really that hard if you have some understanding of the OS you’re installing. Getting networking to network; easy (mostly). Learn a new program without reading the manual. Easy.

Hell, I “figured out” how to use AutoCAD once upon a time; well enough to teach Engineers how to use it. But the theory of electronics and circuits might as well be molecular science or astrophysics when I read it. Klingon.

And having to know this stuff is not going to make me a better radio operator cause I will never build a radio. If I can’t buy it off the shelf, plug it in, and use it, then I just ain’t gonna do it.

The FCC made a good decision to not require anyone to know Morse Code. That way you don’t have to learn it unless you want to learn it. This electronics stuff should be the same. Why does the book tell you what a Magnetron tube is, explain the way it’s made and what it does, when the only place you’ll see them is in your microwave oven? (And why is it called a oven when it doesn’t bake?)

So, yeah. Frustrated.

Knowing-knowing

Class tonight so posting early. Everything is SSDD around here. Gotta remember to stop by and get milk on the way home or I’ll be having dry cereal for breakfast. But I’ll forget tonight and have bacon tomorrow. (BACON!!!!!)

Let Us See If This Works!

Installed Ubuntu Studio (Linux) and have been getting it set up and running. Trying different programs that are supposed to do what I do in Windows 7 normall. So far, Blogio (or Bloglio) will not connect to my blogs. This is Zoundry Raven and we’ll see how it works. Or not.

Desert.jpg

Installed VirtualBox and am trying to install Windows 7 on it and even though I got it installed, it doesn’t want to activate. I think it thinks I’ve used too many licenses. It’s running for now, but … I’m installing Windows 7 to use my usual programs (and a couple I’ve paid for) until I can find an equivilant in Linux.

Didn’t post yesterday because I made a trip to Seattle to have dinner with SWMBO and some of her co-workers. That was nice. Spendy, but nice. The ferry ride over was nice too and, OMG, the young bootie and legs were out in force. The sun shining on untanned legs was blinding! But that didn’t keep me from walking the waterfront until SWMBO found me for the dinner. It was hot, but nice (for me).

Stopped by where the Navy ships were parked for Seafair; but didn’t feel like waiting in line for an hour or more for the tour. Met and talked with a HM1 walking down the waterfront. Nice conversation. Saw plenty of “real” Navy walking around and even some Canadian Navy people. And the “Knee Deep” Navy (Coast Guard) was there too.

Anyway, by the time we got home last night I was too pooped to reboot into Windows and make a post. Spent most of today getting this Linux to work and do what I want it to. Still working on that.

So, let’ see if this will post… (Still not sure if I will be using this program or not)

Really! I’m Not Kidding. I *NEED* To Be Rich!

Y’all think I’m kidding; but I’m not. Unfortunately, I’m one of those people that feels my financial worth is tied to the amount of money I have. (Whereas a Liberal figures their financial worth by how much money you have.) Being a Retired Navy Corpsman, and just plain retired, and getting only my Navy Retirement & Social Security (BOTH of which I worked for BTW. Benefit my ass!), I never seem to have enough. Money.

microaggression

Tried starting one of those “crowd sourcing” things, “Let’s Make OldDocKing Filthy Fookin’ Rich,” but it never really took off. Can’t understand why not. Could it have been the site motto “Give OldDocKing The Lifestyle You Always Wanted!”? Ah, well. Kickstarter is next I imagine.

Which in and of itself is kinda funny. When I was a kid, kickstarter was what Dad did to our asses if we didn’t move fast enough for him. I really think because of Dad, and his free use of making us stand in the corner, grounding us, and using his belt on our backsides when he saw the need, I now suffer from a crippling disease called “Respect For Other People & Property.”  And I still hold doors for those of the Female Gender. (And pretty much anyone coming up behind me really.) I’ve made several Psychiatrist’ careers.

But we won’t get into that. For now.

Not much going on around here. Supposed to be 90+ degrees today so people, for the most part, are hunkering down in their air conditioned hovels and not moving around much. Except me, of course. Holiday traffic is going to be a real BITCH around the area later; what with people sweating in their cars in the lousy traffic we usually have around here made worse by everyone trying to get out of town for the holiday weekend. Civilization will one day die in a traffic jam. His sister, Courtesy, has already fallen ill.

TV Land Can Kiss My Ass!

Found some frozen Shrimp (in the freezer of all places) slowly going bad and thought I’d better use it. Once I cleaned them up (de-shelled them), threw them in a skillet with some butter, garlic, chopped onions, and chopped celery until they were bright reddish. Poured in a jar of that alfredo stuff SWMBO likes, made angel hair spaghetti, and dinner was served. Oh, peas too. I’m not much into pasta but it wasn’t bad if I do say so myself.

Went and watered the garden. I got peas ready to pick! Mater plants are matering. Bell Pepper plants hardly change; but at least they’re still there. Yes, They’re in Their planter over There.

And that’s pretty much it. Picked SWMBO up and we’re home. I’m playing with some of the video files my new dashcam recorded and kinda, sorta, watching 2001: A Space Odyssey but am about to go lay down and read. A Book; not Tumblr.

Wow! 398.2 Miles Later. What A Great Day Yesterday!

Taking a trip to Portland to meet a Niece I met once before a LONG time ago. SWMBO and I were in the truck and hit the road by 0900. Belfair to Shelton to Tumwater to Portland to the East Historic Columbia River Highway off I-84 to visit several Falls and it took us only about 3 hours. And only two “rest” stops! Butt-ton of rain but it was scattered.

We stopped for the Wahkeena Falls, Multnomah Falls, & Horsetail Falls. Got totally soaked just from the rain; but then you add in the mist coming off the Falls and you’ve got some serious wet. But it was cool! Wasn’t sure if my pictures would be in focus because of the lens getting wet; but they didn’t turn out half bad.

Still had some time to “waste” so we headed further East and stopped at the Bonneville Locks & Dam and took the tour. (Truck told me to turn on Dam Road.) it was pretty interesting. They have windows on the fish ladder where you can watch fish swim upstream.

“The Girl” (our Nav system) took us on the scenic, back roads, route to “The Screen Door” restaurant in Portland where we were to meet my Niece. Got there about 1630 and they didn’t open until 1730. Got to wait in line with a bunch of folks. If you ever get to Portland, you really need to stop by and eat. The food was excellent. But get there early cause the line gets long.

My beautiful Niece and her Girlfriend (who is also very easy on the eyes) showed up and (I think) we had a very nice visit. I gave her all the old pictures of her Dad that I’ve had laying around the house forever and she seemed to enjoy them. Just spent time getting to know each other.

Finished dinner and our visit and headed North. Several times the rain was so hard that traffic slowed to 35 mph for a bit. But, all in all, the trip home went pretty smoothly. We went 398.2 miles yesterday on 1 tank of gas. Still have just over 1/8th tank left (but I’ll take her down and fill her up today cause I’m paranoid about running out of gas).

But, of course & as usual, the best part of the day was getting to spend time and seeing new sights with my Schweetie. I really appreciate her taking the day off from her usual Sunday routine to make the trip with me.

Back to pretty much SSDD around here. Getting my usual chores done with the addition of laundry that I didn’t get to do yesterday. Cat puked on the quilt on our bed so that’s getting a special wash today. I’d like to wash that damned cat in the washer at the same time but SWMBO would get upset about it. Cat too probably.

Sun came out for a bit so I took the Dog for a tour of the back 40. That wind we had around here yesterday took down one of that old, rotten, tree I was planning to cut this next summer. Broke off about half way up. That’s good.
