Damn! Damn! Damn! Damn!

My Windows VM went TU, and stayed that way. VMWare itself will attempt to start any VM I click on, and die. I’ve uninstalled, reinstalled, DE installed, reinstalled, uninstalled again and killed everything that started with VMware, reinstalled and it still does the same thing. When I break it, it stays broken.

So, I think I’ll just do my posting and those other 2 programs on my laptop. It’s Windows 7, will stay Windows 7, and works.

It figures the VM would crash just after I wrote a really funny post to post tonight. And there’s no way I’d ever remember what the hell it was I wrote. So you get this. Short and to the point tonight.

Not much else going on. Sunday routine. SWMBO made some delicious Ham steaks, rice, and corn-on-the-cob for dinner. MCARC 2-meter Sunday Chat Net went well with 10 check-ins. Finally starting to cool off for the evening.

Think I’ll go do the last uninstall of VMWare, read my mail, and chill for the evening.

Well, Ain’t That Just Lovely!

Seems my bank doesn’t like Linux nor Firefox when run in Linux. Doesn’t like the Windows Firefox when run in a VM either. So, that means, if I want to do online banking, I have to boot back to my usual Windows. Ain’t that just peachy. When will the rest of the world catch up to the 22nd Century?

Note to all you Linux Program Developers from a relative Linux Newbie: Make your programs install with one double-click. I’m trying to install “Drivel”, which has to be done from the command prompt (which, if I weren’t already used to would, in itself, be intimidating) and get errors like:

) were not met:

No package ‘glib-2.0’ found
No package ‘gmodule-2.0’ found
No package ‘gtk+-2.0’ found
No package ‘gconf-2.0’ found
No package ‘gnome-vfs-2.0’ found
No package ‘gtksourceview-2.0’ found
No package ‘libsoup-2.4’ found
No package ‘libxml-2.0’ found

So, WTF do I do now? Sudo apt-get install that whole list? Why don’t y’all just make it download and install whatever it needs? Or include everything in one package? If I weren’t dedicated to switching to Linux something like this would make me consider staying with Windows. Until Linux (whatever distro) is more user friendly it’ll never become mainstream. (And I finally just gave up. Too many “can ‘t find” errors.)

b3-2Did manage to install Handbrake & MakeMKV in Linux so those I won’t have to install in the Windows VM. Now if I could just get WLW to work under Wine. Then I could pretty much get away from Windows completely. That would be nice.

Not much else going on around here. Regular Saturday routine. SWMBO is at the Genealogy Library until later this afternoon. Have no idea where (or even if) we’re going this evening for dinner. Just as long as I get to spend time with her I don’t really care where.

She called me up and had me meet her at Taco Bell in town. So I went (of course). It was nice being out with her. I let her go do the weekly shopping at Safeway by herself though. She usually saves a few bucks when I don’t go with her for some reason.

rr2cLooks like Summer is over too. Saw that the Salmon Counters had set up their station, complete with RV, and were open for business. Damn! That means we can expect cooler temperatures, cloudier days, and Fall to arrive shortly. We might have a couple of days in the upper 70’s, but don’t fool yourself into thinking this nice Wx we’ve been having is going to continue for very long. Thank You, Salmon Counters!

And that is really about it. Just installed a shit-load of stuff and I’m gonna go play for awhile.

Gonna have to reboot first …

Still Trying To Get This To Work

Still trying to get all this posting crap settled. Posting by mail ain’t working and the “fix” (loading plugins) gives me more to remember (special pins and shit). So I’m back to WLW and a VM until. In the mean time, here’s the post from yesterday.

Got woken up by lightning this morning. At about the usual time I get up. Thought someone had driven down the driveway until it thundered. That was cool! It was also enough to get me up for the day.

And it’s been thundering off and all all day. Highly unusual for around here. Thought I saw lightning out of the corner of my eye a couple of times; but haven’t seen it directly. Yet. And, yes, I have my video camera going “just in case.”

So, not much going on. It’s finally wet outside (which we really need!) so I’ve only been out there to make sure my 2-meter antenna is weathering the breeze and the Caravan isn’t leaking.

SWMBO is off to Shelton and Jury duty. Looks like a 7-9 day trial unless someone confesses and changes their plea to guilty. She has to use her vacation time at work or take days without pay. She wants to keep the Utah trip as planned so it looks like she’ll be about a half a paycheck short for the next one. Bummer. Too bad you can’t get your full pay for doing your civic duty.

This change in Wx has given me a slight headache. Just enough of one that I really don’t feel like cooking dinner; even though I was going to cook for both of us. Think I’ll take her to Taco Bell if she gets home soon enough. If not, I’ll go the Dinty Moore route. Wait, I still have a hot dog that’s been stewing in chili in the fridge the past couple of days. Hmmm …

SWMBO stopped off at Safeway and got Asian for dinner. Glad she did. Just after eating I started feeling cold. Like she turned on the air conditioning or something. It’s an hour later and I’m still freezing. Think I’ll go take a hot shower and see if that warms me up.

Looks Like I’m Back! For Now …

And, man, what a struggle it was! Wound up reinstalling Ubuntu Studio 3 times before I could get it to work right. Biggest problem was it would boot to a blank screen. I could click on the screen and get a log-in box. Enter my password and go to a blank white screen. Reinstall again. Same Same. Finally found an entry online (on my laptop) to download and install the nVidia-430 video driver and that seems to have worked.

Abandoned house at sunset

Of course, somehow in all that I lost a couple of directories; including that big, beautiful, Windows 7 VM I had set up. Damn. Damn. Damn! I’ve set up another but can’t get the thing to authenticate. Which means in less then a month it’s going to start bugging me to do that. Damn. But the new Windows 7 VM is looking good and about 1/3 the size of the other. Now if I can just keep the thing!

Not much else going on. Was a nice day. Almost 90 degrees here. Other than getting dressed to take my Renter to the Ferry Landing I didn’t wear anything all day. I like days like that.

MCARC 10-meter Chat Net went okay. I can really hear two of the guys on my big inverted-V antenna, and can almost hear two others on the new Alpha Antenna. That’s weird. (To me.) I live in a radio-weird place.

Soon as I close this VM I’m going to back it up to one of my other drives!!!!!!!!!!
